February is the so called month of love and my question to you is: are you still in a loving relationship with your health and fitness  resolutions or was it more like a month long fling which left you unsatisfied and wanting more?

To be clear, I am not a fan of the fad (and that’s putting it lightly) Health and fitness for me and those who I train is, or is turning into a long term relationship (oh yes, things are serious); it’s something you invest yourself and your time in, not simply a month of detox tea and sit ups.

Throughout January in particular, we are bombarded with all the detoxes, celeb workout DVD’s, shakes, diets, lotions and potions predominantly promising super health and abs on abs in a matter of weeks.

The catch here however, is that the majority of these fads are not sustainable and most likely won’t benefit you in the long term. These are the flings and they require less investment but in the end you break up with them.

The ultimate goal is to live and move healthfully well into our later years; so I propose LOVE

LOVE the skin you’re in and train and nourish your body not because you hate it but because you LOVE it

Find an activity you LOVE to do and which makes you happy…

And finally learn to LOVE the journey. No relationship is easy and there will be times that you struggle and times you need to adapt, but when it comes to the health and fitness relationship that you LOVE, there is one thing for sure, you always get out what you put in!

Legging Lust

Leggings

The love I have for leggings is real and as my daily fitness uniform, they create the base of my outfit and have a become a bit of a feature of my day to day look… closely in line with sunglasses. It definitely makes getting dressed for work fun… they can reflect my mood, the season or be completely functional, especially on those cold winter mornings. There are only a few pairs which can hold up against hours outdoors throughout December…

I get asked regularly where my leggings are from and so I decided to go through the ever expanding collection and share just some of my favourites with you. With a couple of the brands the exact pattern may not currently be available but I have provided links so that you can shop all their latest collections…

Now I know how seriously us girls take leggings, so my mini reviews will always be honest… Life’s too short to wear things you don’t love and it’s important to know what will work for you and make you feel super woman bad ass when you slip them on…

frankie_leggings_boom_aTully Lou – These neon and mesh beauties most definitely turn heads wherever I go. They are not for the faint hearted but are extremely comfortable and flattering with a low waistband and sexy paneling. As a shorty I have to tuck the bottoms cleverly, but that’s just short girl problems…I love them! Just be careful of those fingernails putting them on and taking them off. Seriously fun to wear! frankie_leggings_boom_bH&M – I’m impressed with the H&M sportswear range. These are definitely my go to basics especially if I am roughing about in training. In the more affordable price range at £14.99 I don’t mind getting these bad boys a bit dirty. They’re not technical clothing but they are cut beautifully with flattering detail and a mid – high waist band. I’m sure they’re supposed to be capri, but on my legs they come to my ankles. The colours and prints in the latest collection fit perfectly into a fitness wardrobe.

frankie_leggings_boom_cGymluxe – A favourite British brand of mine, the Deco leggings are a key piece in my wardrobe. The fabric offers muscle compressing qualities and the high stretch with sweeping mesh give that signature luxe look. The plum colour is just perfect for the new season! The leg length is very generous on these, so if you’re a shorty you may want to get them taken up or tactically tuck. As well as this their leggings are a dream to wear and the colour…oh the colour! The red is on point and there are more to choose from too. Extremely flattering waist band, great length and the material is super snug and doesn’t lose shape at all. My pair are a bit too thick for summer training but I will be rocking them a lot now that the season’s changing. A MUST have!

frankie_leggings_boom_fPrana – “A brand should give much more than it takes from the world” Another beautiful ‘environmentally conscious’ company making gorgeous leggings. Prana leggings are so soft and comfortable, with yoga at the heart they are perfect for my practice and I tend to save them for that and relaxation. As well as comfort, they are incredibly well cut and the patterns are so pretty! I wear the capri, but they also have full length online – Definitely worth checking out the latest collection.

frankie_leggings_boom_gOnzieI discovered Onzie in Story Coffee when I asked the lady wearing them where they were from. It trns out that she was the London distributor (The brand is Aussie)…and the rest they say is history. It’s no secret that I love some mesh so me and these leggings were destined to be together. Another yoga focused brand, they are extremely soft with a wide waist band and the leg length isn’t too extreme (I only have to tuck them under half an inch) The cut of the mesh is extremely stylish and slick. I wear mine off duty too… J’adore!

I do love to talk leggings – I hope the info on each brand is helpful…With a new season upon us, I feel some style updates will be on the way!

Mighty Tasty

How amazing was the weather last week? I was in sunshine bliss and so it was perfect timing to receive a lovely refreshing parcel of goodness from brand new company MightyBee.

She Does: City Is My Playground

Second in the ‘She Does’ series, I headed to Brick Lane to try my hand at City is My Playground with its founder Nicola Cher Geismar. We were quite literally flexing in, on and around the City!

Nicola started City Is My Playground as a creative way to stay strong after suffering a knee injury which meant she could no longer take part in break dancing. She realized that her environment, the City of London was the perfect backdrop of things to climb on, balance on and explore in a unique way. I’ll never look at a doorway in the same way again!!

After a warm up to prepare our bodies for the urban challenges ahead, we kicked off the session with some lamp post scaling, obviously… I mean is there any other way to get acquainted with this new style of training?! Once I’d got the hang of the foot placement and grip I could try out the static hold which, apart from looking pretty cool, is a challenging move….hello shoulders!!

From here it was a case of ‘what can we do with this?’. A doorway is no longer just a doorway and a telephone exchange box is no longer just a telephone exchange box, it’s a workout and a chance to improve your strength in a whole new way.

The joy is in the creative opportunities all around us if we just open our eyes and our minds…City is My Playground nails this idea!

After a great afternoon of City flexing tuition, I’ve got some new outdoor moves to add to my repertoire and I’m sure I’ll be spotted hanging from a lamppost very soon….South London, watch out!

Guaranteed urban fun times!

No Gym? No problem!

With a bit of imagination, it is possible to create a workout wherever you are and have some fun in the process. The majority of my workouts are either park based or home based. Come rain or shine I can keep fit, predominantly using just my own bodyweight and it’s FREEEEEEE!

If you open your mind and use what’s around you, the possibilities are endless. No excuses, just get outdoors and use your environment. Here are some ideas…

Bus stop tricep dips. Simple & effective. Try 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps

Nice little space to get some squats in off the main street – That’s right, I parked my toosh there – such a rebel! Try 4 sets of 15 reps

Not just a bike rack…Perfect for practicing your chin up game. If you’re not quite there yet, these racks are perfect for incline press ups too. Try 3 sets of 6-8 chin ups or 3 sets of 12 incline press ups

NB: This road was partially closed…I am not telling you to step into the road and do press ups (LOL) BUT, this is an anywhere, anytime kind of exercise. Try 3 – 4 sets of 15 reps

Leggings are my favourite and my fitness focused lifestyle allows me to wear them pretty much every day… So, when a Gymluxe shaped parcel arrived on my door mat you can imagine the excitement and how quickly the packaging was torn open revealing the new Deco leggings in plum (yum). Naturally, I put them straight on and pranced around the house, eyeing them up in the mirror from all angles.

I’m already a huge fan of this awesome British Brand and wear their Diamond Cut leggings a LOT. They’re just so sexy. The main difference for the better with the new design, is that Gymluxe have now improved the technology of their leggings to provide more muscle compression as well as greater coverage. With a really nice moderate to high waistband they hug you all the way from top to ankle.

And now on to that famous paneling…This new shape is just all kinds of sleek and has certainly caused a few double takes in the park while training my clients. It is super flattering and I am all for a bit of tasteful skin flashing when it comes to kit. The plum colour is definitely a welcome tone in my workout and off duty wardrobe…On days off it’s perfect with my leather jacket and Nike blazers for relaxed weekend style.

Now, I wore these beauties a lot last week and to date they have been put through prancing (obvs), full days training clients, knees & bum on the floor, hill sprint training, bar training, a weekend with my god son and Saturday shopping. So far, so good, so sexy…

Valentine’s Edition

For all those lovers wanting to celebrate Valentine’s Day a little differently this year or for those who want to burn off the heart shaped chocolates, I have put together a short video with Mr fizzYcaL, of some exercises you can take on with your other half.

You know what they say… Couples who train together, stay together! And in the process there will be plenty of laughter & sweating…oh and even more of an excuse for a romantic bubble bath afterwards!

So, what are you waiting for, check out the video below, get your best lycra ready, grab your lover and get your sweat on…

As we don’t want any injured lovers, please make sure you warm up before starting your workout and if you are unsure about any exercise please check out the pointers below.

Press Up & Clap: Assume press up position facing your partner. If you are new to press ups or not able to stay in full press position you can bend your knees but don’t cross your ankles. Keep your core engaged and lower your chest as far as you can towards the floor

Pistol Squat: Stand facing your partner but slightly off to the side of each other. Hold each others wrist and bend the knee nearest to your partner keeping the other leg straight. As you come back up, focus on pushing through the standing heel and really squeeze your glutes aka bum muscles. If you can’t get all the way down, go as far as you can and come back up. Keep yourself and your partner upright by pulling on their arm.

Piggy Back Carry: Just like the school days. Make sure you let your partner know when you’re jumping on and if you’re the base, keep your knees slightly bent. Hold on tight whether you’re being carried or carrying… If you’re not quite strong enough to carry your partner then they can simply give you some resistance by holding your waist or shoulders as you walk and trying to pull you back.

Abs Circles: The key to this exercise is keeping your core engaged throughout. If you can’t quite straighten your legs, bend at the knee slightly but keep your body at 45 degrees and your core tight.

Press & Push: Partner on the base make sure you keep your arms nice and straight and strong and lower your partner with control down towards your chest as far as you comfortably can.Keep your core tight and push back up to the starting position. Partner on top (hehe) keep your arms nice and strong as well, straighten your body so that your core is engaged and your back is straight. Bend at your elbows and press down as low as you can then push back to the starting position.

Whether you’re getting sweaty with your partner or not, I wish you a lovely Valentine’s Day….This year lets make it about presence over presents!
