End of Year Resolutions

Lets break the mould – how about instead of waiting for January to put those resolutions into action, you start them now and get ahead of the New Year madness? You hear so many stories of people starting and quickly giving up, so maybe January isn’t the best time after all – maybe the time is now!?

2015

Come January it’s one of those things we all do…myself included. We set so many goals for ourselves in a time of pressure for constant self-improvement and it can all feel a little overwhelming. Well, let’s shake things up and get cracking. And let’s be honest, if you can get started now and work through the festive period, you’re basically bad ass!

Sparkler

So this is where I come in with some survival tips for making the most of your training ventures, which I hope will help you on your journey…

Do something you ENJOY! Consistency is key when it comes to training and trying to do something regularly which you simply don’t enjoy means you’re less likely to keep it up… There are so many options out there as individual as you are and you mustn’t be afraid to PLAY and try things out… have FUN!!

FOCUS your goals and don’t overwhelm yourself. I am a sucker for making a really long list and then struggling to know where to start so this is something I am also working on. Give yourself two to three fitness goals to attack and this should help you to stay on track. When working on your goals remember to enjoy the PROCESS and celebrate achievements as you go…

Being ACCOUNTABLE to someone can really help on those days you struggle to find motivation. If you have a friend who also wants to train, agree times in the week to work out together…encouragement, support and maybe a touch of competitiveness could be just what you need. There is also the option of hiring a Personal Trainer to kick your butt and help you to really step out of that ‘comfort zone’ – It can also be a positive way of beating plateaus and ruts.

FIT KIT is my weakness. There’s nothing better than a super slick pair of leggings to get me in the mind set for training like a warrior – It’s the lycra effect. Investing in great training gear can give you a real boost and it’s also a lovely reward for yourself…feeling good is really important. Some of my favourite brands for kit include: fizzYcaL, GymLuxeAdidas and Catalyst Activewear ….Check them ouuuuuuut

change

Whatever fitness journey you are on this year and onwards into 2016, I hope it is a journey full of fun, tonnes of sweat, great achievements, goal smashing and some wicked lycra… Go forth and conquer and when you do, give yourself a massive high five!!!

Legging Lust

Leggings

The love I have for leggings is real and as my daily fitness uniform, they create the base of my outfit and have a become a bit of a feature of my day to day look… closely in line with sunglasses. It definitely makes getting dressed for work fun… they can reflect my mood, the season or be completely functional, especially on those cold winter mornings. There are only a few pairs which can hold up against hours outdoors throughout December…

I get asked regularly where my leggings are from and so I decided to go through the ever expanding collection and share just some of my favourites with you. With a couple of the brands the exact pattern may not currently be available but I have provided links so that you can shop all their latest collections…

leggings

Now I know how seriously us girls take leggings, so my mini reviews will always be honest… Life’s too short to wear things you don’t love and it’s important to know what will work for you and make you feel super woman bad ass when you slip them on…

frankie_leggings_boom_aTully Lou – These neon and mesh beauties most definitely turn heads wherever I go. They are not for the faint hearted but are extremely comfortable and flattering with a low waistband and sexy paneling. As a shorty I have to tuck the bottoms cleverly, but that’s just short girl problems…I love them! Just be careful of those fingernails putting them on and taking them off. Seriously fun to wear! Available to buy at HipandHealthy

frankie_leggings_boom_bH&M – I’m impressed with the H&M sportswear range. These are definitely my go to basics especially if I am roughing about in training. In the more affordable price range at £14.99 I don’t mind getting these bad boys a bit dirty. They’re not technical clothing but they are cut beautifully with flattering detail and a mid – high waist band. I’m sure they’re supposed to be capri, but on my legs they come to my ankles. The colours and prints in the latest collection fit perfectly into a fitness wardrobe.

frankie_leggings_boom_cGymluxe – A favourite British brand of mine, the Deco leggings are a key piece in my wardrobe. The fabric offers muscle compressing qualities and the high stretch with sweeping mesh give that signature luxe look. The plum colour is just perfect for the new season! The leg length is very generous on these, so if you’re a shorty you may want to get them taken up or tactically tuck. Seriously sexy, stylish leggings! Enter FRANKIE10 at the checkout for a 10% discount when you shop online – The new collection is landing soon and not to be missed.

frankie_leggings_boom_dPrimavera – If you are looking for tropical vibes in your workout wardrobe, look no further than Primavera Fitness. The leggings are super soft and hug your body in all the right places while still being extremely durable. The Afro Chic pair have a lower waist band, however there are other designs to suit everyone. I mainly wear my leggings for yoga, but the occasions they have been through HIIT training they felt amazing. Inspired by samba, nature, sun and sea the prints are guaranteed to add zing to your outfit – LOVE! Enter FRANKIE01 at the checkout for 10% discount when you shop online.

frankie_leggings_boom_eCatalyst Activewear – A brand that looks this good on while also saving forests is a winner in my books. For every meter of fabric going into their clothes, Catalyst fund The World Land Trust to buy a meter of forest. As well as this their leggings are a dream to wear and the colour…oh the colour! The red is on point and there are more to choose from too. Extremely flattering waist band, great length and the material is super snug and doesn’t lose shape at all. My pair are a bit too thick for summer training but I will be rocking them a lot now that the season’s changing. A MUST have!

frankie_leggings_boom_fPrana – “A brand should give much more than it takes from the world” Another beautiful ‘environmentally conscious’ company making gorgeous leggings. Prana leggings are so soft and comfortable, with yoga at the heart they are perfect for my practice and I tend to save them for that and relaxation. As well as comfort, they are incredibly well cut and the patterns are so pretty! I wear the capri, but they also have full length online – Definitely worth checking out the latest collection.

frankie_leggings_boom_gOnzieI discovered Onzie in Story Coffee when I asked the lady wearing them where they were from. It trns out that she was the London distributor (The brand is Aussie)…and the rest they say is history. It’s no secret that I love some mesh so me and these leggings were destined to be together. Another yoga focused brand, they are extremely soft with a wide waist band and the leg length isn’t too extreme (I only have to tuck them under half an inch) The cut of the mesh is extremely stylish and slick. I wear mine off duty too… J’adore!

I do love to talk leggings – I hope the info on each brand is helpful…With a new season upon us, I feel some style updates will be on the way!

If you have any fave brands you’d like to share, please leave a message in the comments! I always love discovering new leg wear!

Join the Tribe

034_WUS_19_06_14_IMG_1712 Last month I wrote a piece titled ‘Reclaim your Body’ – The message? To live healthfully and not chase the next fad or trend; to celebrate in your uniqueness, whatever your shape or size and to train and eat well, not because you hate your body but because you LOVE your body!

This is something I feel very strongly about when it comes to female fitness and health; with so many mixed messages, unrealistic images in the media and weight loss pills flying about, so many people I speak to, simply feel lost in it all!

As I am writing this, there is a report on the radio about a young girl who tragically died from taking too many diet pills. This upsets and angers me…Firstly because people are creating these toxic & dangerous pills to sell and secondly because a young girl has become so insecure about her body at a young age that she felt she had to take extreme measures which cost her, her life.

Something needs to change and I want to affect positive change as directly as possible in the hope that it can make a difference to the way that women see and train their bodies… 032_WUS_19_06_14_IMG_1707 055_WUS_19_06_14_IMG_1835 So, as I head into chapter two of my freelance PT life, I am excited to launch Frankie Holah’s Bootcamp.

From the beginning of June in South London, you will be able to attend female only sessions based around using your own bodyweight to help improve your fitness and health…. Whatever your shape, size or fitness level, come and join the tribe, get empowered and reclaim your body!! 027_WUS_19_06_14_IMG_1622 Locations will include Brixton and Clapham with morning and evening sessions available – If you would like to come along, please register your interest by emailing frankie@frankieholah.com and keep an eye on my social media @frankieholah for confirmed days and times!!

Female Calisthenics Movement: Media Moment

WH3

2015 really feels like the year of bodyweight training (aka calisthenics), the style of training that I have been involved in and promoting for the past couple of years.

I have seen bodyweight training open up unexplored opportunities for women and men keeping fit, without the need for a gym membership or lots of equipment.. With busy lifestyles, this style of training removes plenty of barriers and for those just starting their fitness journey, it allows them to build confidence, body awareness, and realize their inner bad ass!!

On a personal level, I love the freedom and creativity of training with nothing but my own bodyweight.Whether I am in a park, at my flat or on the go, I can keep fit! I make the world my gym!

It is great to see female calisthenics in the media and I was delighted to appear on Women’s Health as a Female Ambassador for Calisthenics.

WH2

Here’s to more women reclaiming their bodies and getting fit and strong bodyweight style, both in 2015 and beyond!

Reclaim your Body!

IMG_2213

Ladies it’s time to take our power back and reclaim our bodies. With Summer around the corner, let’s make it the season of the Warrior Woman!

For too long we’ve been sold the wrong message about what female fitness is. The simple truth is, it’s about health, strength and dedication. Happiness, confidence and the body you deserve are just the great by products.

When it comes to fitness, there’s an athlete in all of us and it’s definitely time for her to shine. We need to train her well, feed her well and treat her well – The rest and recovery matters as much as the sweat and reps.

It is so easy to be hyper-critical of our bodies with so many photoshopped and filtered images flying around, which makes it even more important to remember that we’re all unique in shape and size. Not only should we celebrate this, but our baseline objective should be to live healthfully and not for the next fitness fad or trend.

Throughout my training journey, experience has shown me that I am happiest and healthiest both in mind and body, when my goal is not based on achieving a look, but running a faster time than last week or adding one more pull up than I thought possible. Nothing beats that feeling of achievement and when you are making progress and enjoying what you do, the rest just follows…

So, whatever your fitness level and whatever your shape, train to suit what YOU want to achieve, with YOUR health and happiness at the heart and in a way that YOU enjoy.

Train and eat well not because you hate your body but because you LOVE your body!!! Channel that inner Warrior Woman!!!

She Does: City Is My Playground

IMG_3173

Second in the ‘She Does’ series, I headed to Brick Lane to try my hand at City is My Playground with its founder Nicola Cher Geismar. We were quite literally flexing in, on and around the City!

Nicola started City Is My Playground as a creative way to stay strong after suffering a knee injury which meant she could no longer take part in break dancing. She realized that her environment, the City of London was the perfect backdrop of things to climb on, balance on and explore in a unique way. I’ll never look at a doorway in the same way again!!

After a warm up to prepare our bodies for the urban challenges ahead, we kicked off the session with some lamp post scaling, obviously… I mean is there any other way to get acquainted with this new style of training?! Once I’d got the hang of the foot placement and grip I could try out the static hold which, apart from looking pretty cool, is a challenging move….hello shoulders!!

From here it was a case of ‘what can we do with this?’. A doorway is no longer just a doorway and a telephone exchange box is no longer just a telephone exchange box, it’s a workout and a chance to improve your strength in a whole new way.

The joy is in the creative opportunities all around us if we just open our eyes and our minds…City is My Playground nails this idea!

After a great afternoon of City flexing tuition, I’ve got some new outdoor moves to add to my repertoire and I’m sure I’ll be spotted hanging from a lamppost very soon….South London, watch out!

fizzYcaL was there to capture the experience so check out the footage to get a real feel of the vibes…

Nicola runs workshops called Flex in the City and you can follow her journey and check out her bloomin’ impressive moves and flexing adventures at @Cityismyplayground

Guaranteed urban fun times!

No Gym? No problem!

1439_UAF_1500x1017

With a bit of imagination, it is possible to create a workout wherever you are and have some fun in the process. The majority of my workouts are either park based or home based. Come rain or shine I can keep fit, predominantly using just my own bodyweight and it’s FREEEEEEE!

If you open your mind and use what’s around you, the possibilities are endless. No excuses, just get outdoors and use your environment. Here are some ideas…

1435_UAF_1500x1017

Bus stop tricep dips. Simple & effective. Try 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps

1447_UAF_1500x1017

Nice little space to get some squats in off the main street – That’s right, I parked my toosh there – such a rebel! Try 4 sets of 15 reps

1477_UAF_1500x1017

Not just a bike rack…Perfect for practicing your chin up game. If you’re not quite there yet, these racks are perfect for incline press ups too. Try 3 sets of 6-8 chin ups or 3 sets of 12 incline press ups

1466_UAF_1500x1017

NB: This road was partially closed…I am not telling you to step into the road and do press ups (LOL) BUT, this is an anywhere, anytime kind of exercise. Try 3 – 4 sets of 15 reps

1489_UAF_1500x1017

I couldn’t help myself – Bit of straddle half planche fun

1391_UAF_1500x1017

And don’t forget to have a good stretch when you’ve finished your workout

London has so many exciting spaces to train in, so get outdoors (especially now that Spring has sprung), explore and soon you’ll be viewing the city as your gym!

Big shout out to fizzYcaL for the images – Check out their website for awesome fitness inspiration and streetwear

Happy training x
